Waldorf is an unincorporated community located in Charles County. In 1949, the county legalized slot machines. As a result, the community of Waldorf came to prominence as a popular gambling destination during the 1950s.

Many residents of Waldorf today commute to work in the Washington, D.C. and surrounding metropolitan areas. A major shopping mall called the St. Charles Towne Centre opened in 1990, drawing shoppers and diners from Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Northern District.
